OUR HISTORY

Light Years Child Development Center, Inc. opened its doors on January 6, 2006, in the Berkley community of South Norfolk. From the very beginning, we became a vital part of the neighborhood, with enrollment steadily rising each year. As demand grew, we expanded our building and services—most notably by adding a much-needed Before and After School Program to support working families across Hampton Roads. This expansion resulted in a 50% increase in enrollment within just a few years.

In July 2021, we opened our second location just a few blocks away, dedicated to serving infants and toddlers. Once again, enrollment surged within months—a reflection of both community trust and the quality of care we provide.

Driven by a deep desire to give back to the community where our family roots run deep, we launched our third location on Johnstons Road in the neighboring Norview area. This campus has since become our flagship—our largest site and home to the highest enrollment across all three locations.

As a family-owned and operated center, our mission remains the same: to provide a nurturing, high-quality environment that supports each child’s development. Every campus operates with a shared commitment to excellence, professionalism, and care that families can depend on.

We provide a safe, developmentally appropriate environment for our children. We focus on delivering a stimulating early care and education experience which promotes each child's social/emotional, physical and cognitive development.

OUR STAFF

Our teachers are highly qualified. Most of the staff have Certificates in Early Childhood Development as well as those with Associates or Higher in Early Childhood Development. We also have staff who are currently working on furthering their education in Early Childhood Development.

We are committed to excellence and understand that continued professional development training ensures that we are thinking fresh, our skills are relevant, and our motivation is high.

Babbette L. Woodbury

About the Founder

Babbette Woodbury, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, is the Founder and Owner of Light Years Child Development Center, with locations in South Norfolk and Chesapeake, VA. Married with 4 children, she has a long history of business and business management.  She worked for the United States Government as a Purchasing Agent.  She also worked as the Office Manager of the family-owned construction business with her husband for over 20+ years.  

With an Associates of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education, Babbette prioritizes reaching into the community to provide opportunities.  She carefully selects staff who are genuinely interested in the business of child development combined with love and compassion.

Babbette expresses her passion for child development through a highly regarded infant and toddler program that combines a no-compromise standard of excellence in operations. She employs a rigorous curriculum that prepares each child for kindergarten and provides an atmosphere that facilitates learning how to interact with peers before they leave the facility.

Babbette has and is still participating in many organizations committed to Quality Early Learning, including Smart Beginnings Virginia, Virginia Quality, PDGB5 Preschool Development Initiative, VQB5, Hampton Roads Directors ECE Business Group, Hampton Roads Shared Services Alliance and Early Education Business Program.

Britney M. Woodbury

Britney Woodbury is the Director of our Norfolk location and oversees the functions of our Chesapeake location.    She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisplinary Studies from Kennesaw State University.  She has a strong desire to see children excel and applies all of her knowledge and experience to ensure that the children receive a quality experience while in her care.  Her main focus is parental involvement and awareness.
